Cautela means security in Latin and Derek has been in the security industry for over 35 years.

Derek A. Smith is the President and founder of Cautela, LLC. At Cautela, Mr. Smith is responsible for the Corporate Vision and Direction, Business Development, Strategic Planning, and Corporate Innovation of Cautela.

Mr. Smith has worked in the Training, Information Systems, Law Enforcement, and Security industries for over 35 years, which helped shape his lifelong dream to be an entrepreneur. 

Mr. Smith has been a trainer and educator for over 25 years with the University of Maryland Baltimore College Training Centers, University of Maryland, Ann Arundel Community College, Strayer University, Nyack College, Virginia University of Science and Technology the U.S Department of Agriculture Graduate School, ASM Educational Center, Inc., Department of Education, Department of Treasury, Postal Service, Defense Intelligence Agency and U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Smith's educations include Doctoral in Organizational Leadership ABD, MBA, MS in Information Assurance, MS in IT Project Management, B.S In Education, AS in Data Processing, AS in Information Systems, and AS in Criminal Justice. He is currently completing an MS in Digital Forensic Science.

Mr. Smith possesses the following certifications: Certified EC-Council Instructor (CEI), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Certified Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI), Certification Authorization Professional (CAP), Security+, and Certified SCADA Security Architect (CSSA).

Mr. Smith was formerly the Principal/Global Coordinator for Cyber Education at Computer Sciences Corporation and was also a Cyber Security Architect and Project Manager working for such clients as Walt Disney, Chevron, and Intermountain Healthcare. 

Mr. Smith was also the IT Security Program Manager for the Enterprise Information Security division at Booz Allen Hamilton. While at Booz he was the IT security manager for the Treasury Network Project Management Office at the IRS. Also at Booz, Mr. Smith was a senior consultant at the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration (OASD/NII) Computer Network Defense-wide Information Assurance Program (DIAP) policy and doctrine analyst in support of global Computer Network Defense Service Provider operations. 

Mr. Smith was a government Information Assurance Manager for Computer Network Defense at the Army research Lab. He was also a formerly IT Security Engineer at the Transportation Security Administration for InfoZen and at Coast Guard for Total Systems Technologies Corporation. 

Mr. Smith spent 18 years as a Federal Agent with the U.S Department of Education, Office of the Inspector General (OIG), U.S. Department of Treasury OIG, U.S. Postal Service OIG, U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and U.S Army Criminal Investigations Division.

Mr. Smith served in the U.S Navy Reserve for 2 years as a navy Seabee, 15 years in the U.S Air Force as a Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI), 7 years in the U.S Army National Guard as Special Agent with the Army Criminal Investigations Division (CID).

Mr. Smith has written or contributed to three books on cybersecurity .
